5 Somali pirates drown with ransom share

MOGADISHU, Somalia – Five of the pirates who hijacked a Saudi supertanker drowned with their share of a $3 million ransom, a relative said Saturday, the day after the bundle of cash was apparently dropped by parachute onto the deck of the ship.

The Sirius Star and its 25 crew sailed safely away Friday at the end of a two-month standoff in the Gulf of Aden, where pirates attacked over 100 ships last year. Hundreds more kidnapped sailors remain in the hands of pirates.

The drowned pirates’ boat overturned in rough seas, and family members were still looking for four missing bodies, said Daud Nure, another pirate who knew the men involved.

Sometimes the only choice isn’t the right choice. Sometimes you have to make another choice. Because sometimes, the only choice bites ya in the arse… hard!

Such rationalization of piracy is reminiscent of press accounts of drug-dealing in black ghettos.

Is AP saying that because their skin is black, all these Somalis can do is “resort” to crime?

As a child of the inner city, I’ve seen my share of the rationalization of drug dealing. Doesn’t matter how you slice it, drug dealing is against the law and if you choose that path, you can go to prison and be miserable or even pay the ultimate price. The Somali pirates got their payoff but paid the ultimate price anyway. That’s how it goes when you roll on the wild and illegal side.
