The Power of Silly Cinema

HAHAHA!! Let those crusty (literally and figuratively) movie critics all bow down to the power of the silly cinema!

‘Scary Movie’ Sends Weinsteins to the Top

By DAVID GERMAIN, AP Movie Writer

LOS ANGELES - Bob and Harvey Weinstein returned to the box-office lead as “Scary Movie 4″ debuted with $41 million, the first No. 1 opening for the new company founded by the former Miramax bosses.

It was the best Easter weekend debut ever, beating the $30.1 million opening of “Panic Room” in 2002, according to studio estimates Sunday.

With the success of “Scary Movie 4,” Bob Weinstein said he hopes to have a fifth film in the horror-spoof franchise in theaters over Easter weekend next year.

“I say the Weinsteins should be getting `Scary Movie’ 5 through 10 ready right away,” said Paul Dergarabedian, president of box-office tracker Exhibitor Relations.

YESSIR! Roll out 5 through 10. Because the silly cinema has power. So much power the professional haters (aka movie critics) give it there best shot in blasting it. Check this classic statement made by the much elightened MaryAnn Johanson of FlickFilosopher.com about Scary Movie 4:

Have I mentioned that people are morons? The only explanation for the terrifying success of the Scary Movies is this: People are morons. When audiences flock to movies about farts, explosive defecation, bodily abuse of little kids and elderly people and defenseless animals, and — for that touch of topical crassness — homophobia, they demonstrate that they are tiny terrified children who never got over the horror of discovering that their bodies produce certain fluids, that they never developed the kind of conscience that allows them to empathize with those suffering pain, and that they still suffer from the ewwwwws that come with learning about sex on the playground from your best friend’s older brother when you’re in second grade.

My my… We are morons if we enjoy Scary Movie 4? Have no conscience about those that suffer pain? Are terrified children? First of all, what happened to fiction? Make believe? Scary Movie 4 and other fictional movies aren’t real. I submit that the MaryAnn Johansons of the world have a bad case of “I gotta judge society for their movie watching habits because I’m definately not like society because of what I like” disease. Whateva gurlfriend. See, I have a simple viewpoint when it comes to movies: to each his or her own. What moves me may not move you and vice versa. But I refrain from calling large groups of people “morons” or other names because they like or dislike make believe. Just seems a little, uh… silly! I mean, we’re talking about MAKE BELIEVE! Are we going to judge large groups of people off of MAKE BELIEVE? Wow.

Yeah I’m pickin’ on ManyAnn Johanson. But I really find the entire professional movie critic business terribly stupid. What’s the difference between regular Joe or Jane movie opinions and a “professional”? Absolutely nothing. So that’s why I will continue to wallow in silly cinema since I love it so. If you don’t, fine with me. Just please don’t exclude me from LIFE because I do.

I don’t much go in for movies like this, but, you’re right about the snobs. Any review that says “people are morons” really is just kind of ridiculous.

DUDE! I bow to your supreme wisdom. Like Dean, i’m not into the Scary Movies but I get very very irritated at movie critics talking down to us over a freakin’ movie. SHEESH! If I want to watch explosion and mass death on the big screen, I just want to watch. not a judgement of my personal belief system.
