Encryption…is a powerful defensive weapon for free people. It offers a technical guarantee of privacy, regardless of who is running the government… It’s hard to think of a more powerful, less dangerous tool for liberty.
Tell it sister (I adore and respect Esther Dyson). Living here in the “connected” portion of the USA, we take for granted the notion of encryption. There are free encryption software out on the Internet that will safeguard your data from those who wish to see. Just think about it my fellow connected Americans… FREE ENCRYPTION! We live in a country where we can give our own government a very hard time seeing our electronic data. Amazing when you get right down to it.
Liberty is defined as:
a. The condition of being free from restriction or control.
b. The right and power to act, believe, or express oneself in a manner of one’s own choosing.
c. The condition of being physically and legally free from confinement, servitude, or forced labor.
d. Freedom from unjust or undue governmental control. (emphasis mine)
Esther Dyson is right; freedom to encrypt is a powerful, less dangerous tool for liberty.
