Van Corvaire’s business was conducted entirely by appointment; his jewelry was custom designed for the very rich and tasteless, people who would find it necessary to buy hundred-thousand-dollar necklaces to wear to a thousand-dollar-a-plate charity dinner, and never grasp the irony.
– Dean R. Koontz, author, “The Bad Place” (1990)
I love that particular excerpt from “The Bad Place“. It says so much in such a small amount of words. I don’t think people in general grasp the ironies of many situations. Not saying that makes you, me, or any one else a bad person. It’s just that if we grasped those certain ironies more, we may just become a little bit better at being human. Or we could shake our heads, laugh slightly, ponder slightly more, and keep on moving towards the future secure in the knowledge that a particular irony wasn’t lost on us.
I’m a big fan of Dean Koontz and “The Bad Place” is a tour de force! But you do have a point there. You want to help others, you volunteer your time not just money! You show some empathy. How ironic it is that you would go to a charity event, wear your finest dresses and show off your jewelry and there are hundred people in Africa dying of war , poverty and starvation everyday or to any God forsaken third world country! I rest my case! Good blog entries!
