Even though I never go to church nor am I down with organized religion, I still respect people that do. But what I can’t stand is some religious people pointing out that every bad thing that affects a large number of people is God’s punishment. I overheard two men talking yesterday in Border’s Bookstore about Hurricane Wilma. What they said (and how happy they were talking about it) just stopped me in my tracks:
Man #1: Hurricane Wilma will be the one yet. Just look at how many have struck this year. I’ll tell ya again; these hurricanes are the Lord’s Throwing Stars. And His aim is always true.
Man #2: Your right. God has his crosshairs on us and isn’t going to let up one bit.
WOW! As a person that has read alot of religious texts, I get thoroughly perplexed at views like the above. So God is all about jacking us up these days? That’s it? What happened to the love that God has for his children? If this is indeed the Age of God’s Wrath and Punishment, it’ll be a matter of time before our whole nation is destabilized and we fall into anarchy. And your happy about that?
I never understood those who seem to love their faith simply because of the punishment that God would levy on sinners. To me (and this is from a purely secular sort of fella), you are destroying what makes religion good; the redemption and renewal of spirit. Not the “I-can’t-wait-until-the-Lord-strikes-down-all-sinners-and-I-will-laugh” angle. That makes you seem a wee bit daft in the grey dome. Frankly, it doesn’t take religion to know good from evil. But being religious, you should know that spreading love and respect via your faith accomplishes much more than spreading fire and brimstone.
Agreed — and this is a devout Catholic talking.

T Steel:
good read. It is totally in concert with an article I did on my blog about conservative principles and philosophy of secularism. Dell Gines turned it into a moose fu#$%g conversation. I am so sick and tired of people trying to impose their religious beliefs on others. I gave him a secular argument to justify one of his views and he was too obtuse and blinded by his Biblical interpretation to understand it. I much prefer people who can think for themselves. I even asked about why there are atheists and gays against abortion and the like, he couldn’t counter. I am actually quite annoyed about it, but your article illustrates the point. I would enjoy your input on conservative principles, but also realize that you have a broad way of thinking. Take care and have a good weekend:) I look forward to reading more of your well thought out posts.
Francis: Interesting that the devout Catholics that I know all pretty much agreed with my take also. I must ponder this.
Mahndisa: I read your article about conservative principles and the philosophy of secularism. And I’m mixing, baking, and about to serve up a solid reply. As far as people imposing religious beliefs on people, I’ve always held the notion that the beauty of religion is the personal awakening and redemption of spirit that people have. I emphasize personal. Oh I better shut up. Making me take away from what I’m going to write.
Good enough to get a major link in my little Blue Room!!! Imagine the hits you’ll get from that!! LOL Seriously, I thought it was a great post.
