Run! Run! Run!!!

I like to think of myself as the ultra flexible movie watcher. I’ll pretty much watch anything since I have an EXTREMELY open mind when it comes to movies. It irks some people but hey, it beats eating cold scrambled eggs. So when a friend of mine recommended Run Lola Run starring Franka Potente and said it was pure style, I didn’t run screaming into the Nexus. And my dear readers, the movie is pure style and so very good (in my opinion of course). A quick plot summary of the movie (via IMDB and written by Jeremy Perkins):

At home, Lola gets a call from her frightened boyfriend who has lost a large amount of gang money he was smuggling into the country. His only chance of staying alive is if she can get replacement cash to him in twenty minutes. Lola decides to try her father at the bank where he works. But exactly how things will turn out depends crucially, almost to the second, on how she sets off on her errand. (emphasis mine)

Director Tom Tykwer goes about this pretty straightforward plot in a very creative, very visual, and very dynamic way. The best way I can describe the movie is an 80-minute music video that keeps you riveted every second. Choices and fate are the central theme of this movie and I don’t want to give any of the details away. Just trust me. I’ve let 15 people borrow my DVD of this movie and everyone has liked it (including my very uptight and proper grandmother).

Almost forgot, this is a German movie that was released in 1999. The DVD has excellent English dubbing so no subtitle reading is necessary. I couldn’t believe the movie was six years old. It just seems so current. Anyway, rent the flick from Netflix, Blockbuster Video, or whoever has it. Worth every penny, shilling, yen, etc.

One Response to “Run! Run! Run!!!”

  1. It is a brilliant movie, and Potente is both luminous and riveting. She was the best thing about The Bourne Identity. I hope we get to see more of her.
