Electrician Task Force

My brother and I are in the beginning stages of coordinating an Electrician Task Force to help our fellow citizens down Louisiana and Mississippi. My brother is a master electrician and I’m a lowly apprentice (under him but learning). We’re going to start contacting local Michigan contractors at first to get the word out. Hopefully we can get some interest and momentum so we can help. I’ll be adding a donation button once we get the interest and some organization. I’ll keep you posted on any new developments.

Thanks Juliette for the advice on coordinating our efforts with FEMA.

Good luck on your apprenticeship. I’ve been an electrician since 1988. Are you in the IBEW? Were you and your brother involved with the Benton Harbor Habitat for Humanity project?

One of my union brothers did that down in Florida, since he was laid off and had plenty of spare time on his hands. He said for the most part it consisted of setting up emergency generators, because it takes a little while before the linemen get power distribution back up and running. In the meantime, he set up generators, helped clear debris and branches from overhead service lines, and helped repair damage to the services so when the transmission was up again, everything would be copasetic.

He said it was a blast. The city here owns its own power plant, and regularly sends line crews out to disaster areas like this to help repair damage. Our Line Clearance (tree trimmers for high-voltage lines) guys also get sent out for this. Best wishes!
