I remember watching a FX original movie called Oil Storm back in June. The movie showed what could happen if a category 5 hurricane slammed into Louisiana, destroying New Orleans, and totally disrupting a vital refined oil pipeline at Port Fourchon, LA. It showed our country reeling from the loss of life and energy reserves due to the hurricane’s damage. Guess what? Gas prices soar, heating oil prices soar, businesses fail, trucking industry grinds to a halt, etc.
And now Hurricane Katrina is in the exact same place and at the same strength as Oil Storm showed. Folks, your normally glib, eccentric, yet strangely charming blogger has grown somewhat somber. I hope the movie is a big exaggeration. I really hope so. If not, interesting yet serious times are ahead for us.
UPDATE
Baldilocks has more information concerning potential damage to New Orleans.
UPDATE #2
New Orleans was spared the full intensity of the eye-wall winds, but there is much damage. There is still a high probabilty of more flooding due to storm surge and high tides. New Orleans isn’t out of the woods by a long shot. Tornados are still a problem. As for the Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama coasts, who knows? Until FEMA and other agencies can get there, we won’t know the full scope of damage. Mother Nature makes sure she gets your undivided attention.
I also saw the FX original film Oil Storm. I got chills when I saw all the events unfolding in New Orleans with hurricaine Katrina. I also hope the remaining predictions of this film don’t come to pass. However, gas prices are on the rise.
